The North Texas Healthcare Compliance Professionals Association (NTHCPA) invites members and other interested health care compliance professionals to join us on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for our Study Group Luncheon featuring Veniecy Nwigwe, JD, MSA and Cecillia Velastegui from the Department of Health & Human Services Office of Civil Rights speaking on “HIPAA/HITECH Act: OCR Speaks.” Ms. Nwigwe and Ms. Velastegui will share key insights from OCR about OCR’s rules, audits, enforcement and other developments as well as tips for dealing with OCR on HIPAA concerns.
About The Presenters
This month’s program gives members and guests the opportunity to hear about HIPAA enforcement from regional investigators from the Dallas Office of Civil Rights of the Department of Health & Human Services, Vaniecy Nwigwe and Jamie Sorley.
Ms. Nwigwe is a Senior Investigator at Region VI in Dallas, TX. As a Senior Investigator, Mrs. Nwigwe supervises investigators in the resolution of HIPAA complaints, i.e. Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules. Also, Mrs. Nwigwe coordinates outreach efforts with schools, hospitals, and private practices.
Prior to her work at OCR, Mrs. Nwigwe was a legal extern for U.S. Bankruptcy Court-Northern District of Texas. Mrs. Nwigwe edited, wrote, and prepared opinions; researched novel bankruptcy issues; and attended hearings on core and non-core issues. Also, Mrs. Nwigwe worked with the Office of Federal Contract Compliance (OFCCP) at the Department of Labor. At OFCCP, Mrs. Nwigwe audited Affirmative Action Plans for discriminatory employment or labor practices.
Mrs. Nwigwe received her law degree from SMU Dedman School of Law and her Master of Science in Accounting from the University of Texas at Dallas.
Jamie Sorley is an Investigator, Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She joined the HHS OCR in 2008. As a member of the Region VI team, Ms. Sorley investigates cases involving civil rights discrimination and the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules. Ms. Sorley also serves as a lead Breach Notification Rule investigator.
Ms. Sorley is a graduate of the SMU Dedman School of Law and a recipient of the distinguished Order of the Barristers award. Prior to law school, Ms. Sorley worked in health care administration. Ms. Sorley is recognized as a Certified Information Privacy Professional (U.S.) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals and is a regular speaker on health information privacy.

The meeting scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on June 18, 2013 at the offices of the Dallas Ft Worth Hospital Council, 250 Decker Drive, Irving, TX 75062-2706 will feature a complimentary luncheon underwritten for those who timely R.S.V.P. here underwritten by IBM. Networking and lunch service will begin at 11:30. Our program will begin at Noon.
There is no charge to participate in the meeting. However space is limited and available only on a first come, first serve basis.
