During the program, Ms. Smith will present and discuss a case study of an OIG investigation of a hospital system and its providers for billing (in)accuracies primarily due to acuity of care issues relating to the 24-hour requirement for admission to highlight and illustrate key lessons all health care providers can draw from her real world experiences about practical internal audit and internal controls insights for improving hospital and other health care billing accuracy and defensibility including:

  • The 990 process
  • Reviewing care for billing accuracy related to acuity
  • Cost, implementation & other challenges presented by go-forward audit process.

About the Speaker

Jennifer Smith, CPA, JD, MBA, CFE, CFF has worked in healthcare regulatory compliance for 18 years, first with a focus on long-term care followed by ten years of accounting, finance, and regulatory compliance for a broader spectrum of healthcare players, working in both a valuation and dispute advisory capacity. Currently Ms. Smith is a consultant for CBIZ Valuation and is an Assistant Professor at Texas A&M Commerce. At A&M, her primary teaching and research interests are forensic accounting and financial auditing, with a focus on healthcare issues in these areas.

Kenya will discuss the opportunities and challenges posed by ACOs as well as other business and operational implications. She will explore the role of specialists in this new primary care driven healthcare economy and how primary care providers are responding to their new-found popularity. She will also discuss the implications of ACOs and narrow networks on provider business models.

About the Speaker: Kenya Woodruff

 Kenya S. Woodruff is Counsel at Haynes and Boone, LLP in the Healthcare practice group. She provides advice to health systems, hospitals, accountable care organizations, ambulatory surgery centers, physician groups, diagnostic imaging centers, and pharmacies on regulatory and transactional matters. She has more than 15 years of experience, having previously served as a Compliance Officer and Privacy Officer of a national publicly-traded radiology services company and as Deputy General Counsel at a large urban academic medical center. In 2011, she was reappointed by the Governor of Texas to her second six-year term as a public member on the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners. She has held each of the executive roles in the Dallas Bar Association, Health Law Section, culminating in her tenure as chair in 2010. She was featured in D Magazine’s Best Lawyers list for Healthcare Law, 2014; selected for inclusion in Texas Rising Stars in Healthcare Law in 2009 and 2013, and Texas Super Lawyers in Healthcare Law in 2014; and invited to join the Texas State Bar College in 2013. The North Texas Healthcare Compliance Professionals Association (NTHCPA) invites members and other interested health care compliance professionals to join us on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for our March Study Group Luncheon featuring Baylor Health Care System’s Robert R. Michalski, CHC, CHPC, Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer, and Bonnie Ann Sexton, CHC, CHRC, PMP, Director of Compliance, Ethics and Operations speaking on “Best Practices for Conflict of Interest Management Programs.” 

Registration & Meeting Details

The meeting scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on March 19, 2013 at the offices of the Dallas Ft. Worth Hospital Council, 250 Decker Drive, Irving, TX 75062-2706 will feature a complimentary luncheon underwritten by Cynthia Marcotte Stamer, P.C. for those who timely R.S.V.P.  Networking and lunch service will begin at 11:30.  Our program will begin at Noon.

There is no charge to participate in the meeting.  However space is limited and available only on a first come, first serve basis.  To ensure your spot and help us to arrange for adequate space and refreshments for this meeting, R.S.V.P. here as soon as possible and no later than Noon on March 15, 2013 to reserve your spot.  Walk in guests will be accommodated on a space-available basis only.

About The Speakers

Robert R. Michalski joined the Baylor Health Care System in Dallas, TX in April 2009 as Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer.  He also serves as the System Privacy Officer and is Certified in Healthcare Compliance and Healthcare Privacy Compliance.  Prior to joining Baylor Health Care System, Mr. Michalski served as Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer for West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh, PA for nine years.  His prior experience also included serving as Director of Patient Financial Services for Allegheny General Hospital Parent (Allegheny Health Education and Research Foundation, AHERF) and as a Senior Consultant with Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group in Cincinnati, OH.   Mr. Michalski received a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology and a Master of Health Administration degree from The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.  He is currently the Chairman for the Association of Healthcare Internal Auditors (AHIA) and Co-Chair of the Healthcare Compliance Council Exchange in North Texas and is a member of the Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA), AmericanCollege of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and Health Ethics Trust.

Bonnie Ann Sexton is the Director of Compliance, Ethics and Operations at Baylor Health Care System where she has oversight responsibilities for compliance related systems, processes, and reporting functions. She co-chairs the Research Conflict of Interests Committee and serves on the System Steering Committee for Policy and Procedure Administration.  Ms. Sexton is a certified project management professional (PMP). She is a member of the Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA) and is certified by HCCA in health care compliance (CHC) and research compliance (CHRC).  Ms. Sexton received a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree in health care management from DallasBaptistUniversity.
